A comprehensive understanding of the radiochannel is a prerequisite for designing efficient wirelesscommunication systems. Next generation wireless systemsare expected to include both new technologies (e.g., intelligentsurfaces, integrated sensing and communication) andnew frequency bands (in particular, above 100 GHz). Thesenew technologies and bands will require a paradigm shiftin radio channel measurement and characterization. Tothat end, we explore the ongoing and planned activitiesthat COST INTERACT Working Group 1 (WG1) hasbeen carrying out. In particular, we describe the positionof WG1 as originally mandated by COST INTERACT,elaborated further by the addition of subWGs on RISand mmWave and THz sounding. Next, we identify thekey challenges faced by WG1 and the two subWGs anddescribe the first steps taken in order to address thosechallenges. Finally, we give an outlook for the activities thatneed to be carried out in order to contribute towards thedefinition of a comprehensive channel modeling frameworkthat encompasses new scenarios and technologies that willbe included in future wireless communications systems. |
