Popis: | Automated facial expression analysis has progressed significantly in the last three decades and different tools have been developed to detect distinct basic emotions. The aim of the present study was to analyse the facial expression of seven basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise and contempt) in a sample of 75 university students with FaceReader. For this purpose, an experiment was designed where participants watched four picture sequences selected from the IAPS International Affective Picture System (IAPS) alternating the level of arousal and valence (high/low arousal, high/low valence). Their facial expressions were recorded for further analysis with FaceReader. The results from the ANOVA indicate that there were no significant differences among the four sequences of pictures (alternating high/low valence and arousal) in the facial expressions of the basic emotions identified or in the neutral expression. Our findings suggest that the automated analysis of facial expression does not correspond to face-expressive pattern recognition that is specific to basic emotions. Therefore, FaceReader may not be the most suitable tool to directly measure basic emotions.
