Seminar diploma paper is divided into theoretical and empirical part. I introduced life and work of Anton Martin Slomšek more in detail within the theoretical part. I presented his path of life from childhood to death in introductory chapter. Afterwards I focused on different areas of his work. Slomšek was preparing himself for the teaching profession already in his early years of life, because lesson and education of youth were the center of his work. Slomšek started with the lesson of Slovenian language already as a listener of Klagenfurt Theological Seminary. He devoted all his work to upbringing and education of people. He was standing up for mother tongue and lesson in Slovenian language. He was a great national awakener, a conscious Slovene, a church organizer, a writer, a poet, a youth teacher, and above all a priest and a bishop, therefore a spiritual shepherd. His the most significant efforts were displacement of diocesan center from St. Andraž in Maribor, foundation of Association of St. Mohor, foundation of Theological School which was predecessor of University of Maribor, establishment of Sunday schools and acceleration of regular schools. He was also a great fighter for equal status of Slovenes, a benefactor, and a patriot. With the help of survey questionnaire in the second part of seminar diploma paper,I wanted to find out, how much Slomšek is still alive among his compatriots on Ponikva. People especially know him as a priest and a bishop that worked among people, but they are less aware of his cultural importance. They are convinced that Slomšek is not appreciated enough, because he has often been overlooked in literature and in school textbooks. None the less, we can notice that things are slowly improving, because people are organizing various symposia in his honor. Year 2012 is also the year of Slomšek, which takes place in memory on the 150th anniversary of his death. He is the first blessed Slovene and that is a great event not only for Slovene Catholic Church, but for all Slovenes.
