Popis: | International audience; The advent of the Bourbon dynasty in Madrid, in 1701, had a deep impact on the Spanish monarchy, be it on the administrative, financial, military or political levels. But the French influence on surgery is less familiar. With the study of the will and estate inventory of Blaise Beaumont, surgeon and dentist to Philip V, we discover the career of a man who strengthened scientific exchanges between France and Spain, and renewed anatomical research, the promise of modern surgery. Educated at Paris University, he continued his career as a protégé of another Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Legendre, first surgeon to the king. He made a name for himself and won the esteem of his Spanish counterparts through his public lectures and numerous teaching works in Castilian, based on his rich experience. The father of many children, and rather wealthy at the time of his death in 1758, he left a library of at least 300 volumes, whose inventory is reproduced here. It turns out from the study of the titles that Beaumont was eager to own the latest books in his line of work, and we have here a catalogue of the profession’s musts, ancient and modern, in French as well as in Spanish. |
