The purpose of the thesis is to test stereophonic against monophonic music and how listeners experience the difference between them. To answer the questions, a listening test was conducted with the associated questionnaire, where 13 listeners completed the test. The panel consisted of both experienced and non-experienced listeners between the ages of 19-36. The listening test consisted of two parts where the first part tested three songs that were mixed to mono, mid-stereo and stereo where the listener got to hear two audio samples at a time where they would choose the audio sample they considered to sound best. Part two consisted of three other songs that were also mixed into the same three versions. Here, the listener would choose the example that sounded the widest. In order to strengthen the results and analysis, a separate questionnaire was sent out via Facebook asking questions about everyday listening. The result shows the benefit of stereophonic music with over 70% where the choices are described with words such as lively, deep and clear to describe stereo. Mono is considered to be flat, confined and narrow which, on a few occasions, has been chosen in front of the stereo where the focus was on the song. |
