This paper introduces the concept of disassembly line for liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors remanufacturing and recycling. By the end of 2004 it is estimated that LCD monitors will surpass CRT monitors in worldwide unit sales. Currently the only methods used to deal with the end-of-life LCD units are incineration or landfill. Both are expensive and environmentally harmful because LCD monitors contain hazardous materials. The European Commission Directive 2002/96/EC on WEEE requests disassembly of LCD monitors with a surface greater than 100 cm2. Disassembly in the recycling process provides the means to efficiently remove the components containing hazardous materials and extract valuable components or metals. |
