Devil and jinn are mystical creatures who were well known in Pre-Islamic Arabia and are still discussed nowadays. It might be less interesting than the concept of jihad or women rights but it is still necessary to discuss the matter of jinn possession and exorcism in order to get a better understanding about Islam religion, thought and culture. Main goals of this Final Thesis are to describe Islamic view on the topic of jinn and exorcism methods and to find out whether devil, Satan and jinn can be used to characterize same creature or different ones. Primary source of information for this paper was Ibn Taymiyah’s (the leading Hanbali jurist and scholar who lived in late High Middle Ages) Essay on the Jinn (Demons) which was edited and translated by Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips. Both of devil and jinn are mentioned in Holy Quran but they are indeed different. Inductive approach leads to conclusion that jinn is more related to humans than to devil or Satan because Muhammad was sent to both worlds: the world of the jinn and the world of man. Jinn is invisible for humans in their normal state of mind but there is no doubt that they can make an affect to possessed person mind, attitude and behavior. Possessed man experiences variety of visions and sounds which are caused by evil jinn and exorcism is the only way to get rid of it. Exorcism is widely criticized in nowadays Western world and is usually described as animism or primitivism. Exorcism is also widely discredited among the medical profession due to all visions which might signalize about serious health problems such as depression, schizophrenia, psychosis or dissociative identity disorder. This study may be useful for further investigation in order to understand Islamic view on jinn existence, possession and its effect on people’s mind and behavior. |
