Hunting for the 16th century sources is a historiographical investigation of all known biographies written about Christina of Denmark (1522-1590), Duchess of Milan and Duchess of Lorraine. Focusing on an individual person, the aim is to analyse primary and secondary sources as well as the internal influences the different biographies have had on each other through time. The study shows biographies generally use primary sources sparingly, also when available, and that the influences of secondary sources are determined by language and availability, rather than scope. The development of modern scientific history research methods has not influenced all the investigated biographies. The most critical approach to the sources was found in the text published 1751 and the least in the text from 2007. |
