The aim of this study was to examine how companies and organizations in the northern part of Sweden define and deal with stress Sweden define and deal with stress at work. A qualitative method was used. Data was collected through interviews and open letters. The data analysis methods that were used to analyse the result were qualitative manifest content analyses based on the hermeneutic perspective. The result of the interviews and open letters of the companies and organizations created five categories: (i) Stress is imbalance (ii) Order in the workplace (iii) Physical activity and mental training, (iiiv) Social support and (v) Good working environment. Companies and organizations defined stress when there is an imbalance between requirements and control. The biggest keys to managing stress in the workplace were organizing, prioritizing, defining and planning the work. In addition physical activity and mental training at work and during leisure time are great tools for managing stress. A social support and a good work environment are also important factors to manage stress in the workplace. The results of this study are placed in the context of the demand- and control model and the concept of empowerment. The results will be of great benefit to health guides and other professionals who work with health promotion as this study confirm the importance of a systematically developed stress management plan and social support.
