Popis: Results from a study for ground surveillance with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) are presented. In particular change detection performance as a function of resolution and target size is investigated using simulated and measured SAR data. For the simulation five homogeneous target sets with sizes varying from one to eight meter have been used and in a measurement campaign a mixed target set that could damage pipeline infrastructure has been used. A specific change detection procedure is applied to obtain receiver-operating curves (ROCs) for resolutions ranging from 0.1m to 8m and the various target sets. From these curves probabilities of detection as a function of resolution are determined. The results show that the smaller targets with dimensions less than 3 meter can only be detected with submeter resolutions limiting monitoring of this type of targets to airborne SAR sensors. Spaceborne SAR sensors are suitable for monitoring targets with sizes down to 3 meter, for example the kind expected in pipeline encroachment.
