Popis: The aim of this paper is to show the importance of the United Nations development programme in the field of fighting against poverty in the world. As a UN agency which is dedicated to development, it is the No 1 partner of the underdeveloped states which need help in various areas of the development process, such as for example capacity building, assistance with the formulation of the national poverty strategies, financial assistance, creation of pilot projects or community programmes which can be used at the national level as well and so on. UNDP is also significant for its network of resident representatives which are at the same time the coordinators of the UN development operations in the country. With the help of these representatives, a successful project can be used in other parts of the world in very short time. By examining the theoretical framework of the development process, the paper underlines the link between the theory and practice which is essential for creating a learning and flexible organization. Since the Millennium development goals become an important part of the agenda of the UNDP, a special chapter is dedicated to them where the basic information about them are summed up, as well as the current situation of their implementation in different parts of the world.
