When the journal was first launched in 1987, the importance of the commensal microbial flora and the consequences of changes to these microbial communities was not as broadly appreciated as it is today. Most work in this area was an extension of the interests of the earliest days of microbiology, namely the development of the gut flora through faecal flora analysis, studies of the oral and rumen flora with improvements in anaerobic methods, and probiotics. The work remained predominantly one of cataloguing what was there using a range of culture media and conditions and traditional phenotypic identification methods. A few researchers around the world used comparative analysis with germ free animals in an attempt to understand the contribution of the commensal flora to the normal state.(Published: 27 June 2011)Microbial Ecology in Health & Disease 2011, 22: 7488 - DOI: 10.3402/mehd.v22i0.7488 |
