Phytoalexin production was elicited in 'Kumquat' flavedo by the use of UV light (254 nm). In the flavedo of irradiated fruit at two doses (0.3 and 1.5kJm-2) stored at 8 and 16 °C with 95% RH two novel antifungal compounds were isolated and characterized as scoparone and scopoletin (6.7-dimetoxicumarin and 7-idrossi-6 metossicumarin, respectively). Peaks of scoparone showed to depend on UV-C dose and storage temperature, reaching its maximum concentration (533.72 microg/g) with the highest UV-C dose after 10 d at 16°C. Inoculation trails carried out at 10 d post-irradiation showed a significant lower incidence of induced infections, while at 30 d this effect was lost. In fruit of the irradiated plots a quicker qualitaive decline occured at both storage temperatures. |
