Popis: The Roman villa of Cottanello is located in the territory of Sabina, province of Rieti (Lazio, Italy), The building (main building phase I-II century A.D., anticipated by a phase III-I century B.C.) is particularly relevant among the villas of this area for its plan articulation and for the richness of its decoration (mosaic floors, marble, architectural terracotta, mural paintings), which are evidence of a "Roman" ideology and lifestyle in an area like that of Sabina Tiberina, close and tightly connected with Rome (Sternini, 2000). During the summer 2015 a census of all mural paintings still in situ, on the walls of the villa, was carried out. For each room and for every fragment a photographic documentation, at macro and micro-scale, was carried out as well as the survey - by mean of a preliminarily visual examination - of the alteration phenomena present on the painted surfaces, classifying their types and distribution (UNI 11182:2006). At the same time, in order to characterize the constituent elements of painted surfaces, 14 fragments of plaster, coming from the "room 25" of the villa, were analysed. In this room, the excavation (from 2012 to 2014) has unearthed different layers of fragmented material, homogeneous from the stylistic point of view, and dating back between the III and IV Pompeian style, compatible with the second construction phase of the villa (Sfameni et al., 2014; Pugliese Carratelli, Baldassarre, 1990-2003). The characterization of painted plaster samples (mortar and paint layer), representative of main colors (white, black, red, yellow, green, and blue) which are present on the excavated fragments (in total 734), was carried out by using the following diagnostic techniques: observation under optical microscopy of polished sections; micro-Raman spectroscopy; X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (Capobianco et al., 2015; Paladini et al. 2015; Toschi et al. 2013; UNI:11176:2006). The collected data, together with the archaeological and stylistic information, have provided important elements useful to understand the decorative complex, to analyze the building and pictorial techniques as well as the chronological definition of the findings.
