Background: Adenomyosis, a benign condition involving the invasion of myometrium by the endometrium, is a relatively common disorder in western countries. However, there is paucity of data in the literature pertaining this condition in North-Central Nigeria, hence the present study.Methodology: The case records of all the patients that had hysterectomy between January 2007 and December 2011 were retrieved from the medical records library. Information pertaining age, parity, indication for the surgery and histology report of the surgical specimen were extracted. In those with histological evidence, the risk factors for the condition were sought in the case files. Results: During the 5-year period, 232 hysterectomies were performed in the centre and 81 of them had histological evidence of adenomyosis, giving the prevalence of 34.9% of adenomyosis. Conclusion: The prevalence of adenomyosis among hysterectomy specimens in the centre (34.9%) is high.Key Words: Adenomyosis, Hysterectomy, Myomectomy, JUTH Jos |
