A tsetse-control campaign was initiated in April 1990 in which deltamethrin-impregnated targets were erected throughout the Ghibe valley. During the subsequent 12 months a substantial decline in the apparent tsetse challenge was observed. A significant decline was also observed in both the prevalence and incidence of trypanosomiasis in cattle, even though the chemotherapeutic regimen that was used remained unaltered. It is concluded multiple drug resistant infections in cattle can be controlled if one integrates chemotherapy and tsetse control strategies. The use of such an integrated approach to trypanosomiasis control would also appear to be a more sustainable control methodology than the application of individual control measures in isolation.
