Sexual practices among high schools’ female adolescents in Lomé, Togo (West Africa)

Popis: Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence of premarital sexual practices and it several aspects among high schools’ female adolescents in the city of Lomé.Patients and methods: It is a descriptive transversal study with a qualitative and quantitative approach. The survey was conducted anonymously among 465 adolescent’s school girls in ten high schools of Lomé, from December 10, 2010 to March 24, 2011.Results: Two hundred forty two adolescents (52.04%) reported having already experienced sexual intercourse from the mean age of 15 years. Other practices were masturbation, anal and oral sex with girls and boys partners. Contraceptive methods used among the sexually active adolescents were condoms (35%), rhythm method (23.5%), interrupted coitus (17.6%) and pill (2.1%). Thirty-one respondents (12.8%) reported having pregnancy once or more, that all ended to abortions.Conclusion: Sexual education must start very earlier (around ten to twelve years) in family and must continue in school programs.Keywords: Adolescent, sexual practices, high school, Lomé
