Splenic abscess is a rare clinical entity with an incidence of 0.2 to 0.7% in autopsy-based studies.Untreated splenic abscess is associated with nearly 100% mortality. A retrospective study of all cases of splenic abscesses seen in our centre over a 10 year period(1992-2001).The epidemiological pattern, microbial flora and modes of presentation were studied. Four(4) cases of splenic abscesses of diverse aetiologies (trauma, septicaemia, haemoglobinopathy) in all of who clinical cure was achieved with antibiotics and Splenectomy. Trauma accounted for 50% of the cases. The commonest organism was S.aureus. Our study confirms the rare incidence of splenic abscess .The 0% mortality supports the efficacy of antibiotics and Splenectomy. However, where the abscess cavities are small ,percutaneous drainage under imaging is better as this conserves the spleen. Jnl Med. Investigation & Practice Vol. 3 2001: 49-53 |
