Regional biodiversity and distribution surveys are of a great importance for determining conservation status of species and in studying factors that influence diversity. Due to the very limited available data considering distribution of many dragonfly species, Balkan Penninsula is still one of the poorest investigated areas in Europe. With the aim of changing that, Balkan Odonatologists meet once a year in one of the Balkan countries. The Balkan OdonatOlogical Meeting (BOOM) combines field studies, lectures and workshops on dragonflies (Odonata). Organized by the Croatian Entomological Society and co-organized by the “Zrinska gora” Society and Slovene Dragonfly Society, third BOOM took place from August 1st to August 7th, 2013. Twenty five participants from nine different European countries had the opportunity to investigate the dragonfly fauna in two different regions in Croatia: Continental and Mediterranean. During the meeting, we visited 57 localities and recorded 44 dragonfly species which resulted in 372 faunistic data on the dragonfly species distribution. Fifteen of the recorded dragonfly species are of a certain conservation concern. BOOM 2014 will take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina from August 1st to August 8th when participants will have opportunity to investigate largely unexplored habitats of different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main focus will be on the Posavina region, one of the least explored regions of the country characterized with rich and diverse freshwater habitats. |
