The paper deals with some standard lexicographic techniques and their partial inapplicability to such a kind of a highly specialised dictionary. This awareness has led to adoption of more appropriate and more user friendly solutions. The Dictionary word list is based upon modern technical literature on diesel engines, auxiliaries, steam turbines, boilers, gas turbines, electrical engineering, electronics, shipboard automation (39 issues), relevant operation and maintenance manuals (8) and various shipboard and technical office documentation, logs, forms etc. The entries are further controlled through dictionaries (18) glossaries (6) and translators (2). Eventually, although of minor importance to this paper, a major problem encountered was unstandardised mother tongue terminology which demanded for a control of terminology in amazing 108 issues. Some experience related to that may also help potential lexicographers. The software used for the text analysis purpose was TEXPACK1, whereas the one for preparing the dictionary itself is called SOFTLEX2. The two authors, Aris Spinčić and Josip Luzer, have been compiling the Dictionary for 12 years. When completed it should incorporate some 35.000 entries. Its volume is estimated to 1300 pages and it is therefore also planned in a CD version. |
