Modrič Cave in Rovanjska (Jasenice Municipality) has complex morphological characteristics consisting of a tangle of underground channels in total length of 829m. Due to exceptional geomorphology, the site has been listed in protected areas as a geomorphological monument of nature. A preliminary archaeological field survey and paleontological trial excavation were conducted during the first speleological research in 1985. However, considering the limited extent of research, an archaeological valorization needs to be carried out in the future. Archaeological field survey of Modrič Cave was conducted by the staff of the Institute for Historical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zadar and the Archaeological Museum of Istria in 2019 within the programs Velebit – Cultural and Historical Heritage of Southern Velebit of the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Croatian Rock Art (CRORA). Different movable and immovable items of material culture were documented during the surface examination of segments of cave passages, namely architectural remains, pottery sherds, and animal bones that broadly date the use of the cave to the Bronze or Iron Age and Early and Late Modern Period. The survey of the right side passage resulted in traces of possible paintings and engravings found on 28 positions on the passage walls and flowstone. These are blotches, lines, and possible handprints in red paint and lines made in black paint. Two positions yielded incisions that might be engravings or traces of animal activities. The finds are interpreted as the remains of cave paintings, broadly dated to prehistory. Considering this was just preliminary research, a complete survey of all segments of speleological structure which could provide information on the type and dating of the archaeological record should be carried out in the future. |
