The specific goal of this paper is to investigate strategies of cross-cultural mediation in the translation of Croatian tourist texts on the Web. Although the rather low quality of translation in the tourism sector has been pointed out by a number of authors, not much systematic empirical research on the quality of translation in this sector has been conducted. In the analysis of the data we draw on the criteria for assessing translation quality developed specifically for translation of tourist texts on Web by Pierini (2007). The analysis is conducted on a corpus of Croatian multilingual tourism Web sites created by Croatian tourist boards. The focus is placed on those texts that provide conventional type of general information on destinations they aim to promote. The analysis of the data takes into account transfer strategies applied (full translation, leaving non-verbal elements unchanged ; partial translation, or summary translation ; modifications of small parts of the ST ; substantial adaptation of the ST), the type of translation problems on the pragmatic level and the translation solutions provided for them. |
