In the presentation, we explain why there were a large number of politically active priests in Croatia in the 19th century and in what ways they canvass during the parliamentary election campaign. Priests were active in the 1871 parliamentary elections in several areas: they campaigned for other candidates, they stood as candidates themselves, and served as members of electoral commissions. They hold different political affiliations but the fact that all 22 priests who were candidates ran for the People's Party, clearly indicates the extent of the clergy’s support of the Party. As many as 23, out of a total of 67 electoral districts, had priests as candidates, which accounts for 34%. More than half, 13 in total, were elected to the Parliament. This proves that priests were politically active, and that they were accomplished politicians. |
