Popis: The objective of the study was to investigate the possible colonization with the bacterium Helicobacter (H.) pylori in chronic laryngitis involved mucosa and invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. If present, direct or indirect methods and histopathologic or molecular procedures to verify H. pylori colonization should be identified. The aim of the study was to assess the possible association between H. pylori colonization of laryngeal mucosa, to find out whether the presence of this infection influences the pathogenesis of laryngeal carcinoma. This prospective, clinically controlled study included 51 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Control group consisted of 21 patients with chronic laryngitis. Blood samples were obtained for determination of specific IgG and IgA antibodies by ELISA to demonstrate H. pylori infection. Samples of inflamed mucosa and carcinoma were obtained for histopathologic and molecular detection of H. pylori. Serology ELISA method shows 76% positive results in carcinoma group and 84.6% positive results in chronic laryngitis group. By use of PCR method, positive findings for the presence of H. pylori were obtained in 13.7% of patients with laryngeal carcinoma and in a significantly higher proportion of patients with chronic laryngitis, 34.6%. There was no correlation between the presence of H. pylori in tumor tissue and the stage of tumor, tumor localization. H. pylori colonization had no impact on the incidence of invasive laryngeal carcinoma, but it has impact on colonisation and infection in chronic laryngitis.
