Popis: It is well-known that the radiative heat transfer has an impact on the overall heat transfer and emissions in the engineering systems that operate at high temperatures. Detailed radiative heat transfer modelling in reactive multiphase processes is still computationally demanding and therefore radiative models are not commonly applied to calculate the radiation impact in internal combustion engines. Meanwhile, in internal combustion engines, current operating conditions feature higher operating temperature and share of exhaust gas recirculation, which both increase participation of gas radiation. Therefore, models that describe the spectral line gas properties are required to enhance the accuracy of the calculated gaseous radiation and predictions of combustion and pollutant formation processes. In this work, the Spectral-Line based Weighted-sum-of-grey-gases (SLW) model is implemented in the computational fluid dynamics code AVL FIRE™ via user functions to account for gaseous and soot radiation. For the solution of the radiative transfer equation, the finite volume method is used featuring multiprocessing, moving meshes, and mesh-rezone procedure. Validation of the radiation model for non-grey media is conducted on simple geometry cases for which analytical results are available in the literature, and on a real internal combustion engine for which the mean temperature, NO and soot emissions are measured. The implemented model is employed for the estimation of the impact of radiation on emissions, such as soot and NO, during the combustion process. Finally, the comparison between results calculated using the SLW and conventional Weighted-Sum-of-Grey-Gases Model (WSGGM) with experimental data is shown. The results calculated using SLW show a good agreement with the experimental mean temperature, soot emissions and NO emissions.
