Use of soil nailing in addressing soil stabilization needs of transportation project can result in effective design solutions and achieve cost savings on large scale projects. A relatively straightforward and cost-effective construction process, coupled with historically good performance under both static and seismic conditions make soil nailing a valuable method in soil stabilization. Successfully used in a variety of projects over the last 40 years, soil nailing today is both a viable and visually attractive solution. The use of soil nailing varies from stabilization of shallow erosion type failures to stabilization of excavations of significant heights. This paper presents a brief summary of the soil nailing methodology and its applicability for various types of transportation projects, soil and groundwater conditions. A discussion of the performance of soil nailed walls during earthquakes is presented along with the results of seismic centrifuge testing and seismic displacement modelling performed by the authors. Both the past performance records and research results point to the excellent behaviour expected of soil nailed structures during high intensity earthquakes. Similarly, their behaviour under static conditions is equally commendable, if applied in suitable conditions. Some examples of the use of soil nailing in transportation projects in engineering practices are presented, and when applicable accompanied with a comparative discussion of soil nailing solutions and other soil stabilization techniques. A short summary of the typical ranges of cost of stabilization using soils nails is also presented. |
