The drawing on paper The Holy familly under the Oak is interesting because of its surrounding border design with miniatures attributed to Juraj Julije Klović (known worldwide as Guilio Clovio), the greatest Croatian miniaturist. Originally, it was part of an illuminated and painted manuscript on vellum. A new, composite work on a wooden support consisting of two distinct artworks is the result of inspiration one of the previous owners. It is considered that the both items date to the first half of 16th century. The art object was submitted to the conservation in the past. Although there is no information about that, the specific alterations have to be considered in relation to previous treatment. The purpose of the present investigation was the study of the appearance and state of preservation of object, while taking into account how it was made and the effects of previous conservation treatments. The technical investigation and characterization of the materials and degradation products were performed by various means: photographic examination, X-ray radiography, microscopy and X-ray fluorescence. The results obtained in this study give new insight in the variety of degradation phenomena that occur in each of two artworks. |
