English is nowadays the most popular and powerful foreign language in the world and it is considered to be a lingua franca. The borrowing of anglicisms is an interesting and relevant subject nowadays, because they are recognised in many areas like economics, politics, science and technology, art, sports, etc. The field of youth language is a very fertile ground for the emergence of new anglicisms, especially because of the growing popularity of the Anglo-American culture. Teenagers want to differentiate themselves from other age groups and they can accomplish that by using anglicisms. Despite the fact that the number of anglicisms grows almost each year, they rarely pose a risk to the native words of the borrowing language ; they usually fill up gaps in the language system and enrich the vocabulary of the receiving language. Some of them take a permanent position in the language, while others fall out of usage relatively quickly. |
