Background: Improvement and innovation in teaching and education are our primary goals. A definite step in this direction was made by the introduction of the 6-year longitudinal course Fundamentals of Medical Skills (FMS), which is focused on communication as well as practical and clinical skills. FMS delivers contents through a combination of simulation on mannequins, roleplay and meet-my-patient scenarios. Material&Methds: An observational, cohort, cross-sectional study was performed on students attending the FMS course. The research was performed as an online survey among 5 generations of students (2nd-6th year/February 2017). Results: 202 students were invited to participate, of whom 141 (69.8%) responded. 83.7% found the course useful. 92.9% favoured practical over communication skills. 86.5% of the students preferred to be taught on patients. 62.4% were able to use the skills acquired through FMS in other courses during the study. 82.3% found practical skills more useful in the higher years and 75.2% thought that more time is needed to practice by simulation on mannequins. 78% preferred OSCE stations to traditional oral exams. Among lecturers’ qualities, knowledge (89.4%), communication skills (75.2%) and approachability (73%) were most valued. Conclusion: Students found practical skills more useful in the higher years of their education and reported implementation of the skills acquired through FMS in other courses during their study. They valued the practical skills more, and found that more time for practice on mannequins would be desirable. However, they appeared to underestimate the importance of communication skills. The surveyed students demonstrated a positive response to the course but underestimated the communication skills. |
