Water pollution by microplastic particles is an environmental problem that is intensely attracting scientific interest on a global scale. In the total amount of microplastic, textile fibers are one of the most represented. Large quantities contribute to effluents and aquatic ecosystems from the production, use of synthetic materials and most of all from the washing process. The amount of released microplastic particles in the washing process mostly depends on the type of textile material, the degree of processing, but also the detergent used and the washing process parameters. In this research, the influence of the simulated and real washing process of three different fabrics on the release of particles was investigated. Quantification of released fibers was assessed by gravimetric method after membrane filtration and characterization by microscopy. The simulated washing process had no effect on the release of particles from the fabric samples, while the real washing process only had an effect on sheddability from cotton fabrics. The obtained results indicate many problems in the preparation of the samples and their analysis. Due to this some recommendations for further research and analysis were highlighted. |
