This paper is designed to contribute to the analysis and modeling of the mechanism of seawater intrusion into coastal karst springs. The spring’ s response to this is used to develop speculations about the structure and geometry of the karst system. For this purpose, a model that uses only observed data at the spring as input data, and that simulates chloride variation in spring discharge over time, is developed. The developed model simulates flow and transport in hypothetical karst conduits, and does not take into account the exchange between the conduits and the surrounding matrix, but only a localized seawater intrusion due to head differences at the position of the conduit branching. The model results give some quantitative insights into the karst system, such as structure and geometry of the conduit system, and help in developing speculations about the process of sea intrusion, and the hydrodynamic functioning of the spring. This model is applied to the spring Almyros at Heraklio, Crete, Greece. |
