The Romani language is a widespread New Indo-Aryan language which is spoken throughout the world. It contains multiple loanwords and some traces of foreign influences in its grammar but preserves the basic grammatical structure of an Indian, New Indo-Aryan language. Its grammatical forms can be traced back through the Prakrits to Sanskrit, whereby the phonetic laws of change in Old Indo- Aryan through Middle Indo-Aryan to New Indo-Aryan, and specifically to the Romani language, must be taken into account. This paper will discuss the derivation and inflection of Romani adjectives and participles, including phonetic changes from Sanskrit to Romani and foreign influences. |
