Bronchial methacholine challenge is a non- specific provocation test performed to assess bronchial hyperresponsiveness {; ; BHR). Because of its direct action on the bronchial smooth muscle, no delayed reactions are observed. Methacholine induces a bronchospasm which is reversible after administration of bronchodilators and the challenge test is performed on an outpatient basis. The most common indication for methacholine challenge test (MCT) in children is suspected asthma. This test has high sensitivity and a high negative predictive value, but a lower positive predictive value. Thus, a positive MCT does not necessarily imply a diagnosis of asthma. |
