The first observation of the tropic algae Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh, in the area of the Barbat Channel (44o44’ ; 16’ ; ’ ; N - 16o53’ ; 32’ ; ’ ; E) (between Rab Island and Dolin Island, Adriatic Sea, Croatia), was in September of 1996. At that time, about 20 m2 of the surface was covered on 350 m2 of affected zone. The algae was located on sandy bottom between depths of 2.5 and 8 m. The colony was manually extracted from October 5 - 14. Approximately 130 hours of diving time in total was needed for the process. Following eradication, there were a number of follow-up investigations of both the eradicated area, as well as the surrounding area (± ; 1 miles), and no algae was found. The last follow-up investigation of this region was in January 1998, done by our team, and no algae was found at that time. |
