Introduction/Rationale: Recognition of the clients’ occupational needs and their involvement in goal setting can have a significant impact on the participation in rehabilitation process and occupational performance. Objectives: This study aims to explore the occupational priorities following traumatic brain injury (TBI) during the first subacute inpatient rehabilitation. Method / Approach: Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was administered to people with TBI (n = 32) during the inpatient rehabilitation on average 120 days following the injury. This study included patients at the level six or higher on the Rancho Los Amigos scale of cognitive functioning. During the initial COPM administration the participants had recognized occupational performance issues in the area of self-care, productivity and leisure, and the most important occupational priorities were highlighted. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results/Practice Implications: A total of 139 occupational priorities were identified, of which the most common was personal care (44.6%), followed by the functional mobility (21.55%), leisure time (8.63), written communication (7.91%), household management (7.19%), paid/unpaid work (5.03%), community management (3.59%) and school (1.43%). Conclusion: The areas of personal care and functional mobility represent the majority of occupational priorities in daily functioning during the subacute rehabilitation following TBI. Understanding the client’s occupational challenges and priorities can be valuable for all team members included in the rehabilitation process. |
