An embrytoxicity test for determination of environmental contaminants with special emphasis on protective role of the multidrug resistance-associated (MRP) protein mediated multixenobitic (MXR) defense in two Meditareanean urchin species - Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula was evaluated in this study. Embryotoxicities of three environmentally relevant contaminants - mercuric chloride (HgCl2), trybutiltin (TBT) and oxybenzone (OXI), as well as sea water samples collected from the reference polluted and unpolluted locations, were compared. The inhibition of MRP protein by specific inhibitor MK571 caused significant increase in embryotoxic potency of HgCl2, TBT and polluted sea water sample, but not of OXI or reference unpolluted sea water. |
