Characterization and diversity of microbiological parameters were assessed with Ilumina sequencing of the bacterial 16s rRNA gene in two drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) in Croatia. Apart from them, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentrations as disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were monitored to evaluate the relationship between DBPs and microbiological community. In DWDS A microbiological parameters through Spearman’s correlation coefficient showed a significant correlation between some most abundant genus in DWDS A and HAAs and none of the bacteria correlated with DBPs in DWDS B, probably due to overall bacterial diversity in DWDS B which is significantly negatively correlated with HAAs. Even with higher chlorine concentrations in DWDS A, less DBPs are produced in DWDS A than in DWDS B as DWDS A is less weighted with natural organic matter (NOM). This study showed how different concentration levels of free chlorine in two different DWDSs affect bacterial diversity and emergence of DBPs |
