Even in modern science classroom, traditional teaching methods are the dominant ones. Their final result is simple accumulation of information and facts, without comprehension and is a lover level of education. The goal of modern education should be to apply knowledge in everyday life. Research has shown that visualization significantly reduces cognitive load of pupils and allows meaningful and purposeful learning, with the help of experiments. Traditional method of teaching pH value and indicators only occasionally involves experiments, using synthetic indicators, which can be expensive and unavailable to many schools. However, plant pigments are pH indicators as well, for instance anthocyanidines, which show different colour depending on pH value – red, purple, blue, green, yellow. A series of experiments using nonconventional plant materials, which pupils use in everyday life, was created. Our objective was to broaden pupils interest in this subject, and to enable successful relating of science information with everyday life. Preliminary research was conducted, in order to determine visually most interesting indicators among selected ones (plum jam, rose hip tea, strawberry juice, etc.). Based on obtained results, several indicators were selected and experiments and worksheets were created. Obtained results prove efficiency of visualisation and experiment in understanding science lessons. Pupils comprehend easily any information they can connect with everyday life. Our results give insight in pupils understanding of chemical structures and processes, and understanding od presence and importance of chemistry in real life. |
