This paper presents the design and detailed experimental verification of oil drilling automation systems, which included draw-works hoist-based Weight-on-Bit/Rate-of-Penetration (WoB/RoP) automatic drilling system, and active damping speed control system of the drill-string rotary electrical drive based on the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) laboratory setup for control systems prototyping. For that purpose, the dynamic models of oil drilling drill-string electrical drives are derived, and suitable control strategies are designed aimed at maintaining precise Weight-on-Bit during drilling and suppressing the undesired drill-string torsional vibrations due to tool friction stick-slip effect. A fully-controlled dual electrical drive is equipped with a state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) implementing the developed drilling system control algorithms, and an industrial PC equipped with appropriate control and acquisition cards is used as real-time simulator of process model dynamics. The presented drilling control systems are tested on the proposed HIL setup for anticipated operating conditions, which represents a necessary pre-requirement before these systems are subsequently tested in the field and commissioned. |
