The paper discusses the value orientations of adolescents and the educational role of school. The author opens with developmental characteristics and social challenges of adolescents, whose attitudes and identity are relatively stable, but still in formation and subject to various influences. Then provides an overview of the results of numerous studies on the values of adolescents in Croatia, whose value orientation corresponds to the value patterns of modern societies. Subsequently demonstrating the wide range of value orientation, a shift away from instrumental and materialistic value patterns and preference of the values symbolizing the expressive social relations, reflexive attitude towards life and the problems of social inequality. In addition, the above listed studies confirm the importance of the values as possible sources of attitudes and behaviors, and value orientations as protective or risk factors of socialization. Concluding remarks refer to the importance of the educational role of schools which are strongholds of humanistic theoretical and methodological framework of (school) curriculum, educational pluralism and prevention activities (pedagogue). Modern schools, through their activities, should cultivate biological nature, critically weigh awareness and knowledge, free persons from their own selfishness and raise them for the values which can inspire the human (co) existence in a qualitative way. |
