As foreign language education differs from country to country, in the objectives, content, and choice of languages, the Guidelines will focus on universal English language teaching standards in contexts where English is not the native language. Aims • Provide guidelines for the creation of English language teaching standards in contexts in which English is not the native language. • Provide a framework, including sample performance indicators, for these guidelines. • Promote best teaching practices and promote expectations and learning goals for students. • Enable existing English language teaching programs to evaluate their practices. • Provide a tool for reflection. • Offer a model not a template. Political objectives • To promote understanding, tolerance, respect for different races, and appreciate the coexistence of different languages and diversity of cultures within a particular context through communication. • To meet the needs of a multilingual and multicultural global community by the ability to communicate with each other across linguistic and cultural boundaries. • To promote multilingualism (the knowledge of a number of languages or the co-existence of different languages in a society), actions and standards for quality teaching where the TESOL EFL Guidelines may act as a model / framework for foreign language teaching standards against which teachers’ performances can be compared. Educational objectives • To promote standards of the English language teaching and learning. • To promote the attitude that learning a foreign language is a lifelong experience. • To provide a tool for reflection. • To promote an interdisciplinary / integrated approach to teaching the content subject and the language (Content-based instruction also referred to as Content and Language Integrated Learning - CLIL). |
