Croatian marine aquaculture constitutes significant part of food production in Croatia. The most important species are European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), Giltheaed seabream (Sparus aurata) and Atlantic bluefin tuna (Tunnus thynnus). However, in recent years other farmed species such as Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) and Common dentex (Dentex dentex) are coming in focus of producers. Intensive farming of fish in particular environmental conditions may favour certain parasite species, so that the parasite population increases to a very high level and can cause serious outbreaks of diseases. This is especially a problem because the use of antiparasitic is still limited in fish farming. Point D of Chapter V of Section VIII of Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 requires that FBOs (Food Business Operator) ensure that fishery products have been subjected to a visual examination for the purpose of detecting visible parasites before being placed on the market. In this context infestation of fish with ectoparasites are emerging problem for the producers because the restrictions of selling fishery products that are contaminated with ectoparasites for human consumption. In this presentation ectoparasites with significant effect of Croatian mariculture, like Diplectanum aequans, Sparicotyle chrisophrii, Caligus minimus, Ceratothoa oestroides, Furnestinia echeneis and Lernanthropus kroyeri, will be discussed. |
