Popis: Background: The aim of this 2-year study, was to investigate retention rate of thermo-cured highly viscous glass ionomer (GIC) fissure sealant in comparison to a control resin-based material. Methods: Eighty teeth with well-delineated fissure morphology divided in two groups were sealed with highly viscous glass ionomer (Fuji Equia Fil, GC) and Helioseal F (Vivadent, Liechtenstein) using split mouth design. Teeth in group A were sealed with Fuji Equia Fil and in group B with Helioseal F. Follow-ups took place after one year (N = 80) and two years (N =76) after application. At each examination, sealant retention and the presence of caries were recorded. Replicas of occlusal surfaces sealed with GIC were analyzed with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) (XL30, Philips, Eindhoven, The Netherlands)). Fisher's exact test were used for statistical analysis. Results: The ratio of intact sealants and those with only partial loss was similar in both groups, at group A was 78% (30/38) and at group B was 84% (32/38) after two years of clinical service (p>0.05). There were no secondary caries lesions in either group. Thermo-cured glass ionomer showed comparable retention rate as a resin-based sealant and there was no statistically significant difference. SEM analysis showed good surface adaptation and remineralization between GIC and the enamel. Conclusions: The thermo-curing procedure during setting of GIC sealants showed comparable results with resin-based sealants. Further examinations are required to examine the long-term performance.
