Water regime of the karst polje in the Croatian hinterland is determined by climate conditions in the area and developed karst forms. Precipitation is abundant in the winter period, while the summer period (dry season) lacks in precipitation. In rainy season the poljes are mostly flooded and in the remaining part of the year the soil often lacks moisture. This uneven moisture in the soil obstructs a more intensive and better agricultural production. Long- lasting floods often cause damages. In order to improve the water regime in the polje, the construction of adequate water facilities is required, where the environment and possible broader impacts on the water regime should be taken into account. The selection of technical solution is conducted by multi criteria analysis for achieving the optimum, taking into consideration all users of water resources. The methodology and necessary multidisciplinary approach to solving the problem of excess water drainage from the polje have been demonstrated in the example of the Vrgorsko Polje, also called Jezero, due to lengthy and frequent floods. A number of alternatives have been developed and an optimal solution selected in a scientific debate. |
