Treatment of municipal wastewater prior to discharge into the environment is necessary to prevent pollution. In order to obtain satisfactory effluent quality, integration of two or more physical, chemical or biological process operations after primary treatment is needed. In this paper, the municipal wastewater is treated with electrocoagulation integrated with sorption on natural zeolite. Experiments are performed in an electrochemical cell with aluminium electrodes under conditions of I = 0.1 A, U = 29.9 V, with the addition of zeolite at the solid/liquid ratio of 20 g/l, and contact time of 60 min. The influence of initial pH values on removal efficiency has been investigated. The pH value, el. conductivity, temperature, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were used for the evaluation of removal efficiency. Results show that reductions in el. conductivity and COD are independent of adjustment of the initial pH values of wastewater. However, the initial pH of wastewater does have a significant influence on the reduction the turbidity and TKN. The increase in solution temperature is higher in acidic medium, which is connected with higher electrode consumption and operational cost. Results confirm that the initial pH of wastewater has a significant impact on municipal wastewater treatment by electrocoagulation integrated with zeolites. |
