Popis: Sacer lapis is a relic brought from Tyre during the Venetian Crusade of 1122-1124, as reported by Cerbano Cerbani’s translation narrative. It served as the altar stone in the baptistery of San Marco. The presentation evaluates the symbolic significance of this relic in Andrea Dandolo's triumphalistic mosaic program in the baptistery of San Marco. Andrea Dandolo had two spaces decorated around 1122-1124 Crusade relics: the baptistery altar with the holy stone and San Isidoro chapel for the body of St. Isidore. It is concluded that associative imaging prompted by aniconic relics in the baptistery area (plaques stained with the Baptist’ blood and the Sacred Stone) have a common denominator and the associative source which are sacramental fluids. In political terms, the Sacred Stone of Tyre connoted the rock-solid simplicity of the Venetian past campaigns in Biblical lands. Dreams of a new Crusade, however, lived on in the Trecento but only through diplomatic efforts and in the visual rhetoric of San Marco baptistery.
