One-year measurements (July 2007 – June 2008) of surface currents using high frequency (HF) radar technique were carried out in the northeastern part of the Adriatic. Measurements made part of the Interreg project NASCUM (North Adriatic Surface Current Mapping). Four antennas were deployed (Rt Zub and Savudrija in Croatia and Bibione and Punta Sabbioni in Italy). Results of these measurements are given in this presentation addressing more specifically properties of the monthly average flow characteristics, as well as vorticity and divergence fields features. Furthermore, detailed analysis has been oriented towards the response of the surface flow field to the characteristic and most important winds in the area, more specifically bora and sirocco. In addition, calm weather surface flow field was discussed. Within these analyses conditional averaged fields were presented and discussed. Calm or wind forced fields were defined for wind speeds smaller/equal to 3 m/sec and for wind speeds larger than 3 m/sec, respectively. Bora is defined as the wind blowing from an azimuth of 450 clockwise from North within an angle of 450 around this central azimuth. On the other hand, sirocco is defined as the wind blowing from an azimuth of 1350 clockwise from North again 450 around that central angle. |
