Among elementary school subjects, science is often defined as difficult and boring, especially chemistry. The main reason for that is the abstract nature of some basic concepts, without which there is no understanding and no application of chemistry in everyday life. Composition of a mixture, density, concentration and chemical reaction are just a few of science terms that are difficult for students to comprehend, and as such are demotivating in mastering curriculum. Chemical experiments have a great importance in clarifying such terms, but are for various reasons often ignored in science classroom. As visualization of experiments allows easier understanding of curriculum and significantly reduces pupils load, experiments should have a greater application in modern science classroom. Aside from being educational, chemical experiments can also be fun and beautiful, and an art form of their own. A workshop composed of a series of experiments using simple and harmless materials, which pupils use in everyday life, was created. Our objective was to broaden pupils interest for chemistry, and to, in a fun and creative way, enable successful relating of science information with everyday life. Also, worksheets to evaluate pupils understanding of studied chemical concepts were created. Our results prove efficiency of visualisation and experiment in comprehending abstract science concepts and lessons. Pupils comprehend easily any information they can connect with everyday life. Our results give insight in pupils understanding of chemical terms and reactions, and understanding of presence and importance of chemistry in real life. |
