Popis: The basic positions of players in water polo: goalkeeper, wing, centre, outside position and playmaker require a particular development level of some dimensions of the anthropological status, which influence the success in water polo. The significance of twelve motor abilities, three functional and 4 morphological characteristics was assessed by five water polo experts. Their assessments show a high degree of agreement about the importance of motor, functional, and morphological characteristics of players on particular playing positions (Cronbach’s alpha is within interval from 0.90 to 0.94). By means of hierarchical cluster analysis of positions of players two groups of players were defined. The first group is comprised of positions: goalkeeper, half-wing and wing, and second of centre and playmaker. The basic characteristics of first group are: speed, accuracy, coordination, flexibility, agility, explosive strength and endurance. The basic characteristics of the secon group are: high longitudinal and transversal dimensionality of the skeleton, large amount of muscle mass and body fat, as well as all types of strength and power on the one hand, and endurance on the other.
