This paper points to the problem of safe navigation of naval ships in the era of high automatization of the ships, emphasizing the decisive importance of human factor for the safety of the ship in every sense even today. A case study compares different accidents of the US Navy ships in similar circumstances and in a relatively short time distance. In the paper the circumstances which led to the collisions, facts and sequences of events have been investigated. The fact is that due to the specifics of modern warfare warships approach the mainland, which significantly makes the task more difficult for the crew in terms of safety of the ship. However, the collision analysis has shown that collisions could have been avoided, that is, the main cause of the accident was a human error. Regardless the prevailing view that high automatization of ship systems makes a warship safer, the paper stresses that basic seamanship skills are essential for the safety of navigation, not only for naval ships, but also for all participants of maritime transport. |
